Can NDIS fund sport?
Yes, the NDIS funds sport-related supports in several ways, depending on what you need. Sport is recognised as a meaningful way to support goals around health, fitness, social connection, and community participation. Knowing which budget category applies helps you use your plan effectively.
Participating in sport
Sport programs that include support workers are funded under Core Supports, Assistance with Social and Community Participation (line item 04_). This covers the support worker's time to assist you at sport sessions, including preparation, travel to and from the venue (if support is needed), and active participation during the session.
The NDIS generally does not fund registration or membership fees for sport clubs, but the support to participate is covered. Some plans may also include Capacity Building funding for skills development through sport.
Spectating (watching live sport)
Going to watch live sport with a support worker is also funded under Core Supports. The NDIS covers the support worker's costs, their time and any associated support, to enable you to attend. The ticket price itself is generally your own expense, but the support to get there and enjoy the event is covered.
This is one of 4titude's most popular activities, we regularly take participants to NRL, AFL, and other sporting events as part of community access and social participation support.
Sport equipment
Adaptive sport equipment such as a sports wheelchair, hand cycle, or specialised hearing-accessible communication device, may be funded under Capital Supports (Assistive Technology). This usually requires an assessment and written recommendation from an Occupational Therapist (OT).
Standard sports equipment, a football, runners, or swim goggles, is generally not covered by the NDIS. The key question is whether the equipment is specifically designed or modified to address your disability-related needs.
Transport to sport
If transport support is included in your NDIS plan, your support worker can assist with transport to and from sport programs and events. Transport funding sits in Core Supports and is linked to how your plan is structured. Check with your support coordinator or plan manager if you're unsure whether transport to sport is included.
